Britain imposes sugar tax on milkshakes and drinks to tackle obesity
New measures have been introduced in the UK to control obesity. The government has announced a sugar tax on milkshakes, packaged milk and various drinks.
According to a government decision, the sugar limit in drinks has been reduced from 5 grams to 4.5 grams per 100 ml. Sugar tax will be imposed on drinks containing sugar in excess of this limit.
British Health Minister Wes Strating told parliament that obesity deprives children of the best start in life and has the greatest impact on the poor. He said that obese people face serious health problems throughout their lives and the government has to spend billions of pounds on their treatment.
According to media reports, the tax will not apply to “open cup” drinks available in cafes and markets. The new sugar tax will be implemented from January 1, 2028.
