President Draupadi Murmu, addressing Parliament at the start of the Budget Session, underscored the government’s commitment to social justice. She highlighted achievements such as lifting 250 million people out of poverty and expanding social security schemes in the last decade.

President Draupadi Murmu, addressing a joint session of Parliament on Wednesday, outlined the central government’s vision for social justice, inclusive growth, and a developed India on the first day of the Budget Session 2026-27. The President addressed members of both Houses in the Lok Sabha chamber, who were present together on the inaugural day of the seventh session of the 18th Lok Sabha and the 270th session of the Rajya Sabha.

In her address, President Murmu said she was delighted to address Parliament and recalled that the past year had been memorable for celebrating India’s rapid progress and rich heritage. He mentioned that the 150th anniversary of Vande Mataram was celebrated across the country, with citizens paying tribute to Bankim Chandra Chatterjee.

Murmu said that the country celebrated the 350th martyrdom day of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Ji. On the occasion of Birsa Munda’s 150th birth anniversary, the entire nation paid tribute to him and remembered his contributions to the tribal community. The events related to Sardar Patel’s 150th birth anniversary further strengthened the spirit of “Ek Bharat Shreshtha Bharat.” The entire nation witnessed that the birth anniversary celebrations of Bharat Ratna Bhupen Hazarika filled the country with a spirit of music and unity. When the country remembers the contributions of its ancestors, the new generation is inspired, further accelerating our journey towards a “developed India.”

Emphasizing social justice, the President underlined that Babasaheb Ambedkar consistently emphasized equality and social justice, which are values ​​enshrined in the Constitution. He stated that every citizen of the country should enjoy their full rights without any discrimination. His government is committed to true social justice. He further stated that as a result, nearly 250 million people have been lifted out of poverty in the last decade, and efforts to empower the poor are being further intensified in the government’s third term.

He stated that his government is working with utmost sensitivity for Dalits, backward classes, tribal communities, and everyone involved. The “Sabka Saath Sabka Vikas” approach is positively impacting the lives of every citizen. In early 2014, social security schemes reached only 250 million citizens. Due to the government’s efforts, nearly 950 million Indians are now benefiting from social security schemes.

The President also highlighted the new Act, VB-G-RAM, which will replace MNREGA. MPs from the ruling party applauded the Act’s provisions, while opposition MPs stood up and protested, demanding the law’s repeal. The President stated that the Developed India-GRAMG Act has been enacted to promote employment and development in rural areas. With this new reform, 125 days of employment will be guaranteed in villages. President Murmu also noted that with 2026, India has entered the second phase of the 21st century, and the achievements of the past 25 years have laid a strong foundation in all areas, calling this year a significant milestone in the journey towards a developed India.
