300 kg prisoner in Austria is a headache for prison administration, daily expenses of 1800 euros

A rare case in Austria has put the prison administration in trouble, where a prisoner weighing 300 kg has become a headache for the authorities.

According to media reports, the 29-year-old man was arrested for recovering 45 kg of hashish, two kg of cocaine, almost two kg of amphetamine and more than 2,000 ecstasy pills from his home. Initially, he was kept in Vienna’s Josefstadt prison, but his heavy body proved unbearable even for the prison bed and he had to be transferred to Korneberg prison, 15 kilometers away, when the bed broke.

According to reports, about 1800 euros are being spent daily on the care of this prisoner, which is ten times more than the expenses incurred by the average prisoner. A specially welded bed has been prepared for him in the jail, while 24-hour supervision by nurses is also being provided.

Judicial sources say that the state is having to make extraordinary arrangements due to the prisoner’s health and weight, but the huge expenses incurred on it have sparked intense anger among the public.

Taxpayers are questioning why such a huge amount of money is being spent on a person involved in a serious crime like drug trafficking, when this money could also be spent on other public welfare projects.
