Cough Syrup Smuggling: UP government files case against 12 more pharmaceutical companies

Notices were issued to the drug company operators seeking clarification. When the owners of these pharmaceutical companies failed to submit their responses, a case was filed against them at the Kotwali police station.

On Friday, the Food and Drug Department filed a case in Varanasi against 12 more suspected pharmaceutical companies in connection with the codeine-containing cough syrup smuggling case. Food and Drug Department Inspector Janab Ali stated that on November 15th, cases were filed against 26 companies, and at that time, 12 more companies were found to be suspicious.

He stated that when the team arrived to investigate these companies, they either found the companies closed or another shop at the address. He added that notices were issued to the drug company operators seeking clarification. When the owners of these companies failed to submit their responses, a case was filed against them at the Kotwali police station.

Meanwhile TheUttar Pradesh government has issued instructions prohibiting the purchase, sale, storage, and distribution of codeine-containing cough syrups and other NDPS-listed drugs.

Roshan Jacob, Commissioner of the Uttar Pradesh Food Safety and Drug Administration Department, has directed all district officials to inspect and monitor these drugs.
