Delhi AQI in ‘very poor’ category, haze in many parts of the city

The air quality index (AQI) level in the national capital remained in the ‘very poor’ category on Wednesday, while visibility was recorded in several parts of the city due to haze.

According to official data, the visibility was recorded at 900 metres at Safdarjung at 6:30 am due to light haze, while in Palam at 7 am due to fog, the visibility was 1,100 metres. Westerly winds blowing at a speed of seven to ten kilometres per hour helped prevent further reduction in visibility.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said that there was no significant impact on air and road transport, however, motorists have been advised to exercise caution in the morning.

Meanwhile, the air quality in the national capital remained in the ‘very poor’ category. Delhi’s overall AQI was recorded at 329 at 6:05 am, based on data from 39 out of 40 monitoring stations.

Several areas in the city recorded significantly higher pollution levels, including Mundka (371), NSIT Dwarka (361), Nehru Nagar (360), Okhla Phase-II (339), Punjabi Bagh (340) and Narela (340), where the AQI was ‘very poor’.

Delhi University’s North Campus recorded an AQI of 319, while Najafgarh recorded 305, Anand Vihar 341 and Ashok Vihar 351.

The health advisory warns that prolonged exposure to such air quality can lead to breathing difficulties, especially for children, the elderly and those with pre-existing health conditions.
