‘Have four children – get tax exemption’, Greek government’s attractive offer to citizens worried about declining population
Many countries of the world are worried about the increasing population. While on one hand the population in countries like India and China has crossed 1.4 billion and the governments here are trying to control it, on the other hand the situation in European countries is completely opposite.
The aging population has become a big problem here. To solve this, the governments here are making such attractive offers that attract people to have children.
A similar step has been taken by the southeastern European country of Greece, which is worried about the declining population. In such a situation, the government here has made an offer under which those who have 4 children in their home will get tax relief.
The Greek government recently announced a relief plan of about 1.4 billion, which aims to deal with the problem of declining population and rapidly increasing aging in the country.
Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis called it the biggest tax reform in 50 years and said the move was aimed at addressing current economic challenges and providing financial support to parents when they have children.
The relief package will come into effect from 2026 and includes a 2% reduction in all income tax rates. In particular, low-income families with four children will be given a zero tax rate.
The government says that Greece has the lowest birth rate in Europe. There are only 1.4 children per woman. If this trend continues, the country’s population could fall to less than 8 million by 2050 and 36% of the population could be elderly.
It is known that Greece is on the verge of becoming the oldest country in Europe according to population figures.
Under the new policy in Greece, settlements with a population of less than 1,500 will also be exempt from taxes. According to The Guardian, Prime Minister Kyriakos said after announcing the offer, “If you don’t have any children, the cost of living is one thing, and living with two or three children is another. As a country, we have to find a way to reward those citizens who choose the alternative of having more children.”
