Meteorite that fell in the US turns out to be older than the Earth

A meteorite that crashed through the roof of a house in the US state of Georgia is older than the Earth, according to experts.

The meteorite was seen shining in the sky during the day in an area called McDonough, after which a loud explosion was heard.

According to reports, despite the decrease in speed and size, the stone was traveling at a speed of one kilometer per second when it crashed through the roof of the house. Its pieces were handed over to experts to find out where it came from.

U.S. scientists analyzed the stone with the help of powerful microscopes and declared it a chondrite, which is the most common type of stony meteorite.

The study revealed that the meteorite was formed about 4.56 billion years ago, which means it is about 20 million years older than the Earth.

Geologist Scott Harris said the meteorite had traveled a long way before hitting Earth.

He said such events used to occur once every few decades in the past, but have now been seen multiple times in the past 20 years.

The meteorite, named the McDonough meteorite, is the 27th meteorite discovered in Georgia.
