Maharashtra has become the first state in the country to sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for internet services with industrialist Elon Musk’s company, SpaceX. This agreement will be implemented after receiving the necessary regulatory and legal approvals from the Government of India. This will provide high-speed satellite internet service to remote areas of the state where fiber or mobile networks are not available.

The LoI was signed by Lauren Dreyer, Vice President of Starlink, and Virendra Singh, Secretary of the Information Technology Department of the Maharashtra Government, in the presence of Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis. Starlink is owned by Musk.

Fadnavis said that with Starlink joining forces with Maharashtra, we are bridging the last digital divide by connecting every village, every school, and every health center, no matter how remote. This partnership reflects our commitment to building a truly future-ready Maharashtra. We are proud to be the first state in India to initiate this collaboration and set the standard for Digital India at the grassroots level.

Starlink is the world’s most advanced satellite constellation in low Earth orbit, providing reliable broadband internet capable of supporting streaming, online gaming, video calls, and more.

As the world’s leading provider of launch services and the only provider of orbital-class reusable rockets, SpaceX has deep experience in both spacecraft and in-orbit operations. Under this collaboration, this technology will enable the Maharashtra government and Starlink to work together to connect remote and underprivileged areas of the state, such as tribal schools, primary health centres, disaster control rooms, forest outposts, coastal areas and aspirational districts like Gadchiroli, Nandurbar, Dharashiv and Washim.
