Australia’s big decision: Recognizing Palestinian state next month
Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese has announced that Australia will recognize a Palestinian state at the United Nations General Assembly in September.
He said the decision is an important step towards promoting a two-state solution and ending violence in the Middle East.
According to Anthony Albanese, the Palestinian Authority has made several promises in return for this decision, including excluding Hamas from a future state, recognizing the peaceful existence of Israel, disarming, holding general elections, ending payments to the families of martyrs and prisoners, governance reforms, educational and financial transparency, and allowing international monitoring to prevent incitement to hatred and violence.
He said this is an opportunity to grant the Palestinian people the right to self-determination in a way that completely excludes Hamas from the region.
The decision has also been reinforced by the recent demand from the Arab League, which asked Hamas to give up its rule in Gaza and hand over its weapons to the Palestinian Authority.
