Canadian experts have discovered a new and interesting way to fight diabetes. They focused on a specific molecule produced by bacteria in the gut, D-lactate, which, when added to the blood, increases the production of glucose and fat in the liver, and thus causes problems such as insulin resistance, high sugar and inflammation in the liver.

This new method has been named Gut substrate trap. Researchers from various universities in Canada have designed a biodegradable polymer to capture D-lactate before it is absorbed through a specific ‘trap’. Which will catch and eliminate D-lactate before it enters the blood.

In this method, experts found that blood sugar was significantly reduced, insulin sensitivity improved and liver inflammation and fibrosis were reduced, while no change was made in weight or diet.

Traditional treatments for diabetes or liver disease focus on targeting insulin, hormones or the liver, but this approach controls a fundamental component of the disease before it can cure diabetes.

The researchers said that if the approach proves successful in humans in the future, it could provide prevention or early treatment for diabetes.
