Heavy rains in Mumbai lead to waterlogging in low-lying areas and roads, local train services affected

There was no respite from heavy rains in Mumbai and adjoining areas on Tuesday as well, which led to waterlogging in low-lying areas in the morning, delaying suburban train services and causing traffic jams at many places.

The fury of the monsoon has gripped the entire country, with Maharashtra being the worst hit. In Mumbai, several areas received over 200 mm rainfall in the last 24 hours, with Vikhroli in the eastern suburbs recording the highest rainfall of 255.5 mm, inundating roads and turning them into virtual ponds. Several parts of the city, including Borivali, Andheri, Sion, Dadar and Chembur, received heavy rains overnight and the downpour continued in the morning, resulting in waterlogging in low-lying areas, including Gandhi Market. Schools and colleges in Mumbai were closed in view of incessant rains and a ‘red alert’ warning issued by the IMD, which has forecast extremely heavy rains at isolated places here and neighbouring cities on Tuesday.

Mumbai and surrounding areas did not get any relief from heavy rains on Tuesday, which led to waterlogging in low-lying areas, delay in suburban train services and traffic jams at many places in the morning. Schools and colleges in Mumbai have been closed in view of the continuous rains and the ‘red alert’ issued by the India Meteorological Department (IMD). The IMD has predicted heavy rains at isolated places in Mumbai and surrounding cities on Tuesday.

The Directorate of Higher Education has declared a holiday in all colleges in the Konkan region of Maharashtra in view of heavy rains. This order is for colleges in Palghar, Thane, Raigad, Ratnagiri and Sindhudurg districts. A day after heavy rains in Mumbai, the metropolitan residents had to face problems due to rain on Tuesday as well. Many roads remained waterlogged since morning and there was a problem of traffic jam. According to officials, suburban train services were delayed and the route of bus services of Brihanmumbai Electricity Supply and Transport (BEST) undertaking had to be changed at some places due to waterlogging on the roads.

Many parts of the city, including Borivali, Andheri, Sion, Dadar and Chembur, received heavy rains overnight and continued in the morning, leading to waterlogging in low-lying areas, including Gandhi Market. According to local officials, Mumbai recorded more rainfall than the suburbs between 5 am and 6 am on Tuesday.

Mumbai Central, Parel, Grant Road, Malabar Hill, Dadar, Worli and some other areas recorded 40 mm to 65 mm rainfall in just one hour, leading to waterlogging at many places. Between 8 am on Monday and 6 am on Tuesday, Mumbai, eastern and western suburbs received an average of 128.86 mm, 154.37 mm and 185.74 mm rainfall respectively, a local official said.

According to data from the India Meteorological Department (IMD), in the 21-hour period from 8.30 am on Monday to 5.30 am on Tuesday, Mumbai’s Vikhroli suburb received the highest rainfall of 194.5 mm. The IMD said that during this period, Santacruz received 185 mm of rain, Juhu 173.5 mm, Byculla 167 mm and Bandra 157 mm. Colaba and Mahalaxmi areas recorded comparatively less rain. They received 79.8 mm and 71.9 mm of rain respectively.
